In the Studio

Taking pictures in the studio is my new thing. And I'm in this sweater labelled "The Studio" too! HOHOHO.

I found the sweater at Goodwill and was like "omg cool!" Upon later research, I learned that The Studio was a magazine we actually went over in my History of Graphic Design and Illustration class! It was published in the early 1900s and was a big part of the Art Noveau and Arts and Crafts movements. However, I think this actual sweater is more circa 1980s than 1910s.

It's starting to get cold out, and I had to change out of my heels just because my toes were getting chilly by nightfall! Most of my tights are at home, though, and it's making life hard for me.

Also, hair talk: I know I say this all the time, but I'm thinking of going for a bob. Not only for cuteness, but for damage control. My bleached ends haven't been cut in at least 6 months, and I twirl my hair all the time. The other day in class I looked down and there were little shards of broken hair all over the table! But I really like my firey hair and I know it'll take forever to grow back out. This is essentially 3 years of growth you're looking at since my last bob.

I was also thinking of maybe going purple next.

Working Lunch Pants

A set for a modcloth contest styling the Working Lunch Pants! This was quite a challenge, since I usually find pants hard to style, especially slacks. I love the color combo gray and gold, though.

Real Life

I wish my life was a movie. Like an indie drama with beautifully lit frames. I'd always look perf and tracks by Ben Gibbard would play all the time and I'd learn lessons and make friends.

Here are some pictures of me posing in a dress:

Art Lately

Hey guys.

Here's some art I've done lately:

A commenter mentioned that there's a lack of racial diversity in my work (ironically, hours after I finished this piece, haha) which is something I really have noticed and been trying to rectify over the past months. Really most of my final paintings are predominately white chicks, so I definitely need to work harder at it. A lot of my work focuses on female empowerment, and it's really important to me to include all types of ladies in that. So here's me making a commitment to make a real effort for diversity.

This is the second book I've illustrated from the Odyssey for class. I traded with someone for it... no way was I not gonna do the Sirens! I wanted them to be a little bit punk.

And here's book 17, where Odysseus wakes up in Ithaca.

A sketch I liked.

And here's some Halloween themed illustrations! The first is a sad sad ghostie girl.

And I also did a real fashionable teenage witch.

As always, if you want a commission, I love doin' them! You can purchase one in my shop.

And if you guys could, will you take another survey for me? This one is for marketing and it's on online vs in-store shopping.

Happy Halloween!

So here's my official costume: I went as Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls!

I went to a couple of Halloween parties last Friday, and this was my costume. Too bad it was dark and cold outside. I spent most of the evening in a cardigan, and I really basically dress like this anyway, so most people didn't get it. But it's okay because I knew it was cute!

It's a really simple costume, too, and cost me less than $5 because I already had most of it in my closet.

My roomate dressed up as Fix it Felix from Wreck it Ralph, and her sister went as a deer.

I hope you guys had a great Halloween!

Why yes, I do love this outfit, thanks for asking! I just kept layering things until I looked like a swooshy colorblocked dream.

Here's some things happening lately:
1. I've been watching tons of Buffy.
2. I have a gigantic ulcer on the inside of my lip.
3. It's tights weather, but most of my tights are at home!
4. Group projects suck.

Guest Post: DIY Bloody Oxfords

Hey guys! Today I've got a cute and creepy Halloween guest post by Skye of My Kingdom for a Hat for you. She's got a weird and fearless sense of style, and I really admire her guts (lololol). Enjoy!

Hey y'all! I'm the mistress of absurdity over at My Kingdom for a Hat. I live for Halloween, and I'm delighted to spread my passion for plague and pestilence all over the blogosphere. Today I'll be teaching you how to stain and style your very own bloody oxfords.

You will need...

1 pair of shoes (white is best, obviously. Other colors might work, but I can't promise the red will interact with them as well as it does with white.)
1 box of Borax
1 cup of water (adjust amount for preference, and make sure to use a cup you don't care about ruining)
1 teaspoon
Red and blue food coloring

Oh yeah, and a towel. Can you tell I do this a lot?

Add Borax to water by the teaspoon. The amount is up to you. I used about 6 teaspoons to about a cup and a half of water to get a nice slimy, not-too-viscous consistency. If you're going more for guts than blood, use more Borax. Keep stirring until you reach your desired texture.

Add red and blue food coloring. Again, the specific amounts depend on personal preference. Just make sure to use much more red than blue. Stir until blended.

Dip your fingertips in the mixture and flick drops onto the shoes. The blood will bead up, but don't be tempted to smear it; it'll start to run on its own soon enough.

If you so desire, squirt a few more drops of red food coloring over the shoes. This will create a nice layered color.

Give them ten or so minutes to dry, and there you have it! A super-quick way to give any outfit a touch of the macabre.

It might be fun to work these into a subtler look, wherein the shoes were the only real pop of absurdity. But I'm me, so I went all out with my Hell Bunny dress and Spirit Halloween headband. I got the jacket for $5 at a thrift store, and it's one of the best-worn items in my closet.

Happy Halloween! Be sure to check my blog over the next few days for more holiday finery.
